December 15th, 2008 Posted in Bank Deals!, Credit Cards

Chase has a primo promotion going on through January 13, 2009 in which they will give everyone a free $50.00 gift card after opening a credit card account with their bank.  The best part is you get to redeem this gift card after your first purchase (regardless of how little you spend on that purchase)!

Here is how it works:

Simply apply for the Chase Credit Card online and within 6-8 weeks of your first purchase they will mail you your free $50.00 gift card.

Terms and Conditions:

1 You will receive 5,000 bonus points with this bonus offer, which can be redeemed for a $50.00 gift card. You will qualify and receive your bonus after your first purchase/first use of the card. First purchase/first use includes purchases, balance transfers, or any checks that are used to access your account, and excludes cash advances. After qualifying, please allow 6 to 8 weeks for bonus points to post to your account. This one-time bonus offer is valid only for first-time cardmembers with new accounts. Existing cardmembers/accounts are not eligible for this bonus offer.

2 You will earn 1 point for each $1 of net purchases. You do not earn points on balance transfers, cash advances, cash-like charges such as travelers checks, foreign currency, and money orders, any checks that are used to access your account, overdraft advances, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, or fees of any kind, including fees for products that protect or insure the balances of your account. There is no maximum number of points that you can accumulate in the program. See Rewards Program Rules and Regulations which will be mailed after your account is established.

3 You will be eligible for quarterly bonus rewards offers as long as (i) your account is not in default under, and/or you have not violated, the terms of your Cardmember Agreement and Rewards Program Rules and Regulations, and (ii) your statements are sent to a US address.

4 To use Chase Rewards PlusSM (“CRP”), you must enroll your account in Chase Online and shop through the links provided. Merchants mentioned or depicted in conjunction with CRP are neither sponsors of or affiliated with the CRP program and are not responsible for any aspect of the program including reward fulfillment. Participating merchants and offers are subject to change without notice. Complete CRP details will be provided online prior to shopping. All marks used with permission of their respective owners.

5 Length of your introductory period will be either 12 billing cycles from account opening for purchases or 3 billing cycles from account opening for purchases depending on our review of your application and credit history. APR is valid for introductory period so long as you comply with the terms of your account. Also, we apply payments to introductory balances before balances with higher APRs. This means that the length of your introductory period may vary based on your payment amounts and the APRs for other balances on your account. If I opened a chase credit card to take advantage of this promo, then eliminated this card after 1 purchase would that negatively effect my credit score?

  2. Dean Says:

    Absolutely it will

Canceling credit cards NEVER helps your credit score. Under most circumstances it will have a negative effect. My suggestion would be to use this credit card for a fixed expense (ie. filling your gas tank every week or grocery shopping). If you keep this card for one set expense you will be fine and can even build credit.

If you don’t have the self discipline, I wouldn’t suggest opening this credit card simply for the $50 bonus (as enticing as it is…)

With so many rewards credit cards out there, its best to compare what other compnaies are offering as well, to be sure that the offer is best for you. Credit card offers have slowed down because of the economy, but it doesn’t mean you should not be picky about which type of card you want to open. You should know all of your options before applying. A credit card affect your credit score in either a positve or negative way, therefore you need to know what you are getting into.
